I discovered distance
running as middle age pursued me with increasing speed. I’ve never been very fast, but I
have great endurance. My first two marathons were done through the
Team-In-Training Program. After completing the first one, I decided
to try another one which led to 5 more. What a decade! Despite a few
chronic problems here and there and the occasional overuse injury,
I’m no worse for the wear.
Happily, I’ve now completed 7 of the
world’s top 10 marathons. My marathons have been like my children,
since I didn’t have any of my own. Meet the kids:
|
 |
London
─ my
eldest (5 hours and 46 minutes of labor) |
 |
Paris & Chicago
─
the twins (4 hours and change) |
|
 |
New York City
─
my feisty, independent one (my shortest labor) |
|
 |
Honolulu
─ my
love child (early morning delivery) |
|
 |
Boston
─ my
miracle (hard labor... not easy) |
|
 |
Berlin
─ my
menopausal surprise (quicker than I thought) |
Will I run another marathon? With time comes
age... and my body is a bit softer. Still, I run. Who knows? Never say
never. Happily, I have my medals and a deep sense of accomplishment.
